Rekeying your locks in an inexpensive way to help ensure the security of your home or business. It is much more cost effective to rekeying your locks than it is to replace them. There are many reasons that you will want to have your locks rekeyed.
When moving in to a new house
When you move into your new house you may have been given a few copies of the key for the front door but do you know how many keys you weren’t given? The realtor probably has a copy or two of the key still. The previous owners may not have had the locks rekeyed or they may have handed out multiple keys to their friends. There could be lots of people that you don’t know who have a key to your home. We hear stories all the time where old home owners have walked into their old house and stolen property. In some cases, the new owners hadn’t even finished moving in!
When changing roommates or tenants in a rental home
Do you have a roommate? Do you rent out part of your home to a tenant? If so, you know that turnover can cause you to quickly lose track of how many keys are out there. It is always a good idea to have any locks they had keys to rekeyed as soon as they move out and a new roommate or tenant moves in. Again, there is no way to know how many keys they had cut and gave to family and friends. Rekeying your locks is a simple way to ensure peace of mind. If you are a landlord and rent out your entire house or apartment to tenants, it is the law in most places that you must have the locks rekeyed for the new tenants. If you skip this step between tenants you could land yourself in some hot water with the tenancy board.
When that darn key is just so hard to turn
Over time as we use our locks, the parts inside and your key slowly start to wear down. When both have wear on them it can make it very difficult to turn your key. This is a frustrating problem to have and one that you don’t need to suffer with. In most cases, a locksmith can simply rekey your lock and it will be as good as new again. There is no need to install costly new hardware on your door because of a stubborn key.
After hiring a contractor
When you decide to have a contractor work in your home or business it is extremely important to have the locks rekeyed when they are done. They will have extra keys cut for the numerous trades that will be completing the different parts of the job. They will put your address on the key so everyone know that key is for your home. While I am sure you hired a contractor that you trust, what would happen if that labeled key got lost? Someone would have free access into your home. I am sure you are like me and like to know who has access to your house.
After a break-up
People break up, it happens all the time. You need to be sure that you ex isn’t going to be surprising you with any unexpected visits and that your property is being protected. This is especially important when there is concerns for your safety and well being. Rekeying your locks will provide you with some much needed peace of mind during a hard time.
When a key is lost
We all give a copy of our key to a trusted neighbour or friend in case of an emergency and those keys can easily get misplaced. You may have lost your own keys, it happens all the time! When an employee leaves
We all hope that we have great staff members who will never leave us and they will never do anything that means we need to let them go, but it does happen unfortunately. Now is the time when you need to protect your business that you have worked so hard to build. An angry ex-employee can cost you thousands of dollars. A quick call to a locksmith to have your locks rekeyed can save you money and a huge headache. Rekeying the locks or having high security locks installed are the ONLY ways to ensure that they do not still have a key to your front door.
